Cut Offs for the JEE

According to an announcement, class 12th marks will be used only as cut off to screen the students for eligibility for admissions to the IITs. Only the candidates who are in the top 20 percentile of their respective boards will be eligible. The merit list will be decided after the results of the JEE Advanced are published. This exam will be on a different day from the JEE main. The JEE Main is a common entrance test that will short-list top 1.5 lakh students who will be eligible to appear for the JEE advanced. 

Hence, according to the new format, students will have to perform well in their class 12 exams as well. This process is put in place to cater to the increasing competition for the limited number of seats in the IITs in the country. Coaching centers are mushrooming in every part of the country and enabling students to get selected in the most prestigious engineering institution. 

Comparision with 2012 Board results data:

Taking into consideration last year's statistics to predict this year's results, one can see that a CBSE student will need at least 78% to be in the top 20 percentile, of the UP board requires 65-66% and Tamilnadu board around 78%. Cut offs for the other boards are listed below:

For General Category Candidates :

CBSE : 77.8%

Tamil Nadu Board : 78.1%

Karnataka : 67.5%

Uttar Pradesh : 65%

Madhya Pradesh : 64%

West Bengal Board Exam : 58%
